Listen and Compare: Amati, Strad, and del Gesu!

For those interested in the differences in sound between early Cemonese instruments, a great video session is on YouTube where you can see five instruments playing the 6 Violin Sonatas and Partitas of Bach for Solo Violin (BWV 1001-1006).  Recorded on May 23rd, 2009.   Here is the line-up:

  • Violin Sonata No.1 in G minor, BWV 1001 on the Goldberg Guarneri del Gesù (ca. 1730)
  • Violin Partita No.1 in B minor, BWV 1002 on the Castelbarco Stradivarius (1699)
  • Violin Sonata No.2 in A minor, BWV 1003 on the Betts Stradivarius (1704)
  •  Violin Partita No.2 in D minor, BWV 1004 on the Brookings Amati (1654)
  • Violin Sonata No.3 in C major, BWV 1005 on the Kreisler Guarneri del Gesù (1733)
  • Violin Partita No.3 in E major, BWV 1006 on the Kreisler Guarneri del Gesù (1733)
